We Are Family

Music Directors: Shankar Mahadevan-Ehsaan Noorani-Loy Mendonca

Lyricists: Irshad Kamil and Anvita Dutt Guptan

Singers: Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, Anushka Manchanda, Suraj Jagan, Akruti Kakkar, Vishal Dadlani, Shankar Mahadevan, Sonu Niigaam and Shreya Ghoshal

Rating: **1/2

Filmmaker Karan Johar and composers Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy have always belted out chartbusters, so the expectations from "We Are Family", Johar's latest production venture, was high. But, though the album offers few melodious tracks, there is nothing extraordinary.

The album boasts of six tracks.

The soundtrack begins with a romantic duet "Ankhon mein neendein" by Rahat Fateh Ali Khan and Shreya Ghoshal. The love song is likeable, but offers nothing great as it has a heard-before feeling. However, the brilliant vocals by two talented singers makes it enjoyable number.

Next is the Indian version of Elvis Presley's classic song "Jail House Rock". It is called "Dil khol ke let's rock" and Hindi lyrics are composed on the tunes of the original. It seems that the composers wanted to repeat the success of their song "Pretty Woman" from "Kal Ho Naa Ho", but somehow it doesn't work. The song fails to impress.

Singers Anushka Manchanda, Akriti Kakkar and Suraj Jagan manage to do a decent job, but no one could even get remotely closer to the legend.

Then comes "Reham o karam" and Vishal Dadlani and Shankar go behind the mike for the song. It starts as an unplugged version, but soon strong orchestration with rock elements make an entry that makes the song interesting and engaging.

Melody strikes again with "Hamesha forever", which is a soft, pleasing song. Sung by Sonu Niigaam and Shreya, it generates interest in the beginning but soon the repeat element creeps in the composition.

Up next is "Sun le dua yeh aasman", a slow version of the theme song. Crooned by Shankar, the track is backed by minimal musical arrangements - something that makes it quite soulful.

The soundtrack also offers a slow-paced instrumental theme track.

The music of the film is neither bad nor brilliant but the feeling of déjà vu is felt in most of them. It's high time Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy reinvent themselves by indulging in some experimentation.

Dabanggs

Music Directors: Sajid-Wajid and Lalit Pandit

Lyricists: Faiz Anwar, Lalit Pandit and Jalees Sherwani

Singers: Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, Mamta Sharma, Aishwarya, Sonu Niigaam, Shreya Ghoshal, Sukhwinder Singh, Wajid, Master Saleem, Shabaab Sabri and Salman Khan

Rating: ***

Keeping in mind the film that is set in a small town in Uttar Pradesh, composer duo Sajid-Wajid have composed a soundtrack for "Dabangg" that has mass appeal and is entertaining.

The album offers 10 tracks.

The soundtrack of the much-awaited Salman Khan flick opens with Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, a favourite of Sajid-Wajid, crooning romantic track "Tere mast mast do nain". The moderately paced track is likeable especially due to the brilliant vocals, and the change in tempo gives an edge to the track. This is a song you would like to hear.

The number has two more versions - one a duet with Shreya Ghoshal and the other a remix.

Then the album takes a turn and brings forward a completely different song "Munni badnaam", composed by Lalit Pandit and sung by Mamta Sharma and Aishwarya. The item number goes well with the character of the film. It is fast-paced and catchy.

This song too has a remixed version attached to it.

Romance again creeps in the soundtrack with Sonu Niigaam and Shreya Ghoshal behind the mike for "Chori kiya re jiya". The song is a soft and melodious love ballad. Even though the composition doesn't offer too much experimentation, the song exudes a pleasing effect.

Next is the title track of the film, which has a faint resemblance to the title track of the film "Omkara". Yet, it is hard-hitting and appeals to the listener. The song crooned by Sukhwinder Singh and composer Wajid himself, describes Salman's character in the film.

Then there is "Humka peena hai", a song soaked in the folk flavour. Vocals by Wajid, Master Saleem and Shabaab Sabri, this dance number is meant for the masses and has dholak as the predominant instrument. This has a remixed version too.

Finally, there is the theme song of the film that is packed with dialogues by Salman.

On the whole, the soundtrack of the film is entertaining and apt for the film.

Hello Darling

Music Director: Pritam Chakraborty

Lyricists: Shabbir Ahmed, Ashiesh Pandit and Kumaar

Singers: Javed Jaffrey, Akruti Kakkar, Antara Mitra, Richa Sharma, Ritu Pathak, Rana Mazumder, Sunidhi Chauhan, Suzanne D'Mello, Shweta Pandit and Priyadarshini

Rating: **

Though Pritam has many chartbusters to his credit, the composer fails to create an impact with the soundtrack of "Hello Darling". The film's music lacks freshness and most of the songs have a 'heard before' feel.

The movie stars Javed Jaffrey, Celina Jaitley and Gul Panag, and is directed Manoj Tiwari.

The album offers five originals and one remix.

The first song is the new version of Lata Mangeshkar's classic cabaret "Aa jaane jaan". By adding extra beats and new lyrics, Pritam has tried to tweak the song, but the effort hasn't yielded good results.

Sung by actor Javed Jaffrey along with Akruti Kakkar and Antara Mitra, the track fails due to an overdose of electronic elements.

Then there is Richa Sharma, Ritu Pathak and Rana Mazumder singing "Band baaja", a song with a strong Punjabi influence. The song is neither bad nor brilliant. It is engaging in the beginning, but listners are likely to lose interest as the track progresses.

Next is "Dil toh saala", a very dry composition with Sunidhi Chauhan behind the mike. This is the title track of the film, but the song has no potential to make it big owing to its unimpressive lyrics and heard-before musical arrangements.

"Attrah baras" crooned by Suzanne D'Mello is a fast-paced dance number. This song too offers nothing great though it might find some place on DJ consoles for a few weeks.

Finally there is "Working girls" with vocals by Shweta Pandit, Ritu Pathak and Priyadarshini. The song is average and does sound interesting in parts, but on the whole, it fails to engage the listener.

The soundtrack may not do any good for the film and none of the songs is likely to become chartbusters.

Aashayein

Music Directors: Pritam Chakroborty, Salim Merchant, Sulaiman Merchant and Shiraz Uppal

Lyricists: Sameer, Kumaar, Shakeel Sohail and Mir Ali Husain

Singers: Neeraj Shridhar, Shaan, Tulsi Kumar, Shiraz Uppal, Zubeen Garg, Shafqat Amanat Ali, Shreya Ghoshal, Mohit Chauhan and Shankar Mahadevan

Rating: ***

Director Nagesh Kukunoor's "Aashayein" generates quite a lot of interest and many of the songs are hummable. The film, which stars John Abraham in the lead, consists mostly of love songs.

The album offers 13 tracks composed by three composers.

The album kickstarts with "Mera jeena hai kya" composed by Pritam Chakroborty and crooned by Neeraj Sridhar. This track is currently doing the rounds of music channels and is gaining popularity. It has a long prelude with soft music and then switches to rock after some time.

The track also has a remix, which is not that impressive owing to excessive and unnecessary beats.

"Dilkash dildaar duniya" is also a Pritam track with Shaan lending his soulful voice. The poignant love song is nice and hummable. The song also has vocals by Tulsi Kumar. The number surely makes for a good hear.

This track too has a remixed version.

After Pritam, Pakistani composer-singer Shiraz Uppal comes into the picture with "Rabba". There is nothing practically wrong with the track, but still it fails to create an impact. It has a heard-before feeling and lacks freshness.

Then composer duo Salim-Sulaiman come forward with "Ab mujhko jeena" with Zubeen Garg behind the mike. The song with a strong orchestration is interesting and foot-tapping. The inspirational song will finds many takers.

This too has a remixed version.

The next song by the composer duo is "Shukriya zindagi" sung by Shafqat Amanat Ali. The track with an optimistic approach is slow-paced and nice to listen to.

The song has two more versions - a sad one and a remix, which totally sounds unnecessary and doesn't go with the mood of the basic track.

Then Salim-Sulaiman offer "Pal mein mila jahan", a slow song with minimal musical arrangements. It has two versions. One a female version by Shreya Ghoshal and the male version by Shankar Mahadevan. Shreya's voice definitely creates an impact.

Finally there is Mohit Chauhan singing the melodious "Chala aaya pyar", a very hummable and breezy tune that makes you sway in harmony.

All the three composers have done their bit and have come out with a decent album that has much potential.
