Lamhaa

Singers: Chinmayi, Arun Daga, Palash Sen, Mika Singh, Kshitij Tarey, Mohd Irfan and Mithoon

Lyricist: Sayeed Qadri and Amitabh Varma

Music Director: Mithoon

Rating: *** 1/2

Music composer Mithoon, who has created music for very few films like "Bas Ek Pal" and "Anwar", has come out with an impressive and hummable soundtrack in "Lamhaa", a film on Kashmir.

Directed by Rahul Dholakia and starring Sanjay Dutt, Bipasha Basu and Kunal Kapoor, the album boasts of six originals.

It starts with "Madno", a soft, pleasing and soothing track that brings forward the sound of the santoor. The romantic song has been crooned by Kshitij Tarey and Chinmayi. With minimal orchestration, beautiful melody and great vocals, the song does make an impact.

"Madno" also has an alternate version, "Saajnaa", where Kshitij's portion has been replaced by Mika Singh. Mika in a slow song like this does come as a surprise, but he just goes on to prove his versatility as he does complete justice to the track.

Apart from a few words that have been changed from "Madno", the song remains the same.

Next in line is "Salaam Zindagi", which has Arun Daga and Mohd Irfan behind the mike. The song starts with children singing Kashmiri lines and then the singers enter with Hindi lyrics. Saim Bhat has written the Kashmiri lyrics. The inspirational track is highly melodious and extremely likeable.

After a long time, one gets to hear the voice of Palash Sen, vocalist of pop band "Euphoria", in a Bollywood film with "Main kaun hoon", a beautifully arranged track. Palash does well in the song that goes from low baritone to high pitch. The haunting music generates interest.

Then there is "Zameen-o-aasmaa" sung by Kshitij Tarey. It is an average track when compared to the other songs in the album. It is more of a situational number.

Finally there is "Rehmat zara", where composer Mithoon takes charge of the vocals too along with Mohammad Irfan. The song has influences of rock and Sufi music. Mithoon belts out a good track again.

On the whole, the album has a robust mix of songs that are soulful and entertaining. Also, Mithoon has done justice to the theme of the film.

Kajraare

Singers: Himesh Reshammiya, Sunidhi Chauhan, Harshdeep Kaur and Shreya Ghoshal

Music Director: Himesh Reshammiya

Lyricist: Sameer

Rating: * 1/2

The music of "Kajraare" is very unlike the soundtrack of films directed by Pooja Bhatt. It suffers from an overdose of composer-singer-actor Himesh Reshammiya's presence. He has not only acted in the film but also composed and sung all the songs.

The album offers seven originals and four remixes.

It opens with the title track "Kajra kajra kajraare" sung by Himesh and Sunidhi Chauhan. Himesh sings the romantic number, which is high on beats, in his signature style. There is nothing engaging about the song and hence it falls flat.

It has a remixed version called the party mix.

Next is "Rabba luck barsa" and Himesh goes solo in this. With uninspiring lyrics and mediocre composition and rendition, the love song can be described as an average number.

This too has a party mix.

Then there is "Afreen" for which Himesh and Harshdeep go behind the mike. There is an Indian flavour to the song but it offers nothing fresh to attract listeners. Himesh fails to create any magic through this slow number sung on a high pitch.

Up next is a song with a folk touch. "Tujhe dekh ke armaan jage", which has been crooned by Shreya Ghoshal along with Himesh, starts with minimal background music, but later the orchestration picks up. Lyrics are average and the composition uninteresting. No luck with this track too.

"Teriyan meriyan" begins with a soft prelude. Once again Himesh sings it with Shreya. This one too is very Indian in its approach, but quite boring. Himesh hasn't gone that extra mile to make the song interesting.

"Woh lamha phir se jeena hai" is a fast- paced, high on beats track. It's very similar to the other songs in the album. It also has remixed version.

Finally, there is "Sanu guzara zamana", a song with a Punjabi touch. This poignant track has a heard before feeling and is sung by Sunidhi and Himesh again.

This one has a lounge mix attached to it.

On the whole, the music of "Kajraare" has nothing extraordinary to offer. Himesh has stuck to his signature style, making all the songs sound very similar.

I Hate Luv Storys

Singers: Vishal, Shafqat Amanat Ali, Sunidhi Chauhan, Shreya Ghoshal, Sona Mohapatra, Suraj Jagan, Mahalakshmi Iyer, Shekhar Ravjiani and Rahat Fateh Ali Khan

Music Directors: Vishal Dadlani-Shekhar Ravjiani

Lyricists: Anvita Dutt Guptan, Vishal Dadlani and Kumaar

Rating: ***

It is titled "I Hate Luv Storys", but the soundtrack of Karan Johar's forthcoming production venture is all about love. Composed by the musical duo of Vishal and Shekhar, the film's music is mushy and melodious.

The Imran Khan-Sonam Kapoor-starrer, helmed by debutant director Punit Malhotra, offers seven originals and one remix.

"Jab mila tu" has been doing the rounds on TV channels. Sung by Vishal Dadlani, it has a very youthful feel and is apt for the younger generation. The breezy love song is enjoyable, especially with the orchestration that is neither too loud nor minimal.

Next is "Bin tere", which is the best song in the album. It begins with English lyrics, followed by Hindi and singer Shafqat Amanat Ali's beautiful rendition turns it into a soulful and melodious number. It has very simple lyrics, but still manages to attract the listeners especially with the entry of Sunidhi Chauhan towards the end of the song.

"Bin tere" has two more versions - a remixed version, which is faster in pace and includes more beats, making it suitable for the dance floor.

The other is a reprised version by Shekhar Ravijiani. It has a raw feel, but it is extremely likeable.

Then there is the title track crooned by Vishal. The fast-paced, English-Hindi song is quite average and fails to generate too much interest.

Next is an all girls song "Bahara" sung by Sona Mohapatra and Shreya Ghoshal. It is a mixture of folk and contemporary music. While Sona does justice with her husky folk voice, Shreya is good in the contemporary part of the song.

This too has another version called Chill, which is sung by Rahat Fateh Ali Khan. Composers have used sarangi for this version and with Khan's impressive voice this version is a clear winner.

Finally, there is "Sadka", which is again a love ballad by Suraj Jagan and Mahalakshmi Iyer. The part where the singer sings in a high octave is impressive; otherwise it is average.

On the whole, the soundtrack of the film offers a number of tracks that are hummable and enjoyable. Vishal-Shekhar have done a good job.
