Lafangey Parindey

Lafangey ParindeyMusic Director: R. Anandh

Lyricist: Swanand Kirkire

Singers: Ronit Sarkar, Mohit Chauhan, Shail Hada, Anushka Manchanda, Shilpa Rao and Suraj Jagan

Rating: ***

R. Anandh, known for composing jingles for ad films, returns to film music direction after 13 years with Yash Raj Films' "Lafangey Parindey". His first film as a composer was 1997 movie "Zor".

The music of the film is simple, easy to understand, yet different. The album boasts of six originals and one remix version.

It starts with Ronit Sarkar singing the title track. The song begins with very middle eastern music, but soon other instruments can be heard. Later it acquires a rock touch and makes it an interesting song for the youngsters. The track, about a group of free spirited people, is already on air and is being appreciated.

Next in line is a light romantic number "Man lafanga" that begins with the sounds of an acoustic guitar. Mohit Chauhan's voice suits this breezy, enchanting and free flowing song. It is melodious with less orchestration and instantly strikes a chord with the listener.

The song also has a club mix, which is not so appealing.

Things pep up a little with "Dhatad tatad", a song about life crooned by Shail Hada and Anushka Manchanda. It has strong orchestration and heavy distortion, but fails to create a mark.

Then there is "Nain parindey" that has Shilpa Rao behind the mike. The song actually grows on you with its great composition, sedate melody and impressive vocals.

"Rang daalein" thrives on western beats and has a rock touch. Sung by Suraj Jagan, it is spunky and totally entertaining.

Finally, the album offers an instrumental track "Born to fly" that is intense and slow in the beginning dominated by a piano and picks up tempo after a few minutes.

On the whole Anandh has made a comeback with an entertaining album.

Peepli [Live]

Singers: Indian Ocean, Raghuveer Yadav, Brij Mandal, Bhadwai and Nageen Tanvir

Music Directors: Indian Ocean, Raghuveer Yadav, Nageen Tanvir and Ram Sampath

Lyricists: Sanjeev Sharma, Swanand Kirkire, Noon Meem Rashed and Gangaram Sakhet

Rating: ***1/2

When Aamir Khan is the producer, then one needs to be prepared for the unpredictable. And that's exactly the case with the soundtrack of "Peepli [Live]". The music composed by multiple artists is Indian to the core and borrows heavily from our country's folk music.

The album boasts of six tracks including one remix.

The music of "Peepli [Live]" starts off with "Des mera" by fusion-rock band Indian Ocean. The song is originally from the band's 'Jhini' album that was released in 2003. But for this film, the lyrics were tweaked a little to suit the theme.

The track is a lively, upbeat classic Indian Ocean number. Its rustic influences add character to it and make it interesting.

The song has another version, which has a few western beats as well. This version is not as raw as the original.

Next is "Mehngai dayain" in the voice of Raghuveer Yadav, who plays a pivotal role in the film as well. The song is a satire on the rising prices and will do well owing to its relevance in the present time. The folk touch to the song and the added chorus make it a good rendition.

The song also has a remixed version, which has western beats along with the Indian influence.

Then comes the dark and edgy "Zindagi se darte ho", which makes you sit up and take notice. The hard-hitting song has Indian Ocean behind the mike. The song is basically a poem by Noon Meem Rashed. The seven-minute-long song is soaked in rock flavour that makes it even more interesting.

Finally Nageen Tanvir, daughter of noted theatre personality Habib Tanvir, sings "Chola maati ke ram", a philosophical song about death. The song is very unlike a Bollywood song and that's what gives it an edge. It is inspired by music from Chhattisgarh.

On the whole, the sound track of "Peepli [Live]" is a robust mix of carefully selected songs from various sources. It is unlike a typical Bollywood album...but being different is what works and clicks with audiences nowadays.

Aisha

Singers: Amit Trivedi, Anushka Manchanda, Neuman Pinto, Nikhil D'Souza, Raman Mahadevan, Samrat Kaushal, Anusha Mani, Ash King and Tochi Raina

Music Director: Amit Trivedi

Lyricist: Javed Akhtar

Rating: ****

With the stupendous music of "Dev D", Amit Trivedi proved his prowess and now with the soundtrack of forthcoming film "Aisha", he has reaffirmed that he is a young composer to look out for.

The music of the film, starring Sonam Kapoor and Abhay Deol, is young, hip and has a raw feel to it. The album offers six originals and two remixes.

The album kickstarts with the title track "Suno Aisha" crooned by Ash King with backing vocals from the composer himself. The prelude holds the interest with the inclusion of the saxophone in the musical arrangement. It is foot- tapping, exuberant and full of rhythm. A great beginning to the album.

Next in line is "Gal mitthi mitthi bol", an amazing folk outing by Tochi Raina. The Punjabi song is not like any run-of -the-mill track. It has the potential of becoming a chartbuster with its unpredictable orchestration and a fun element.

The remix version of the song is equally engaging.

"Shaam" by Trivedi and Neuman Pinto touches the heart instantly. The acoustic version has a raw feel, as if someone is singing live in front of you - which is the song's USP. Its soft rendition of words and melodious music enchants the listener.

Then Anushka Manchanda, Samrat Kaushal and Raman Mahadevan sing "Behke behke". The song has a complete carnival feel. The sound of the accordion and the fast-paced vocals are intermixed with English and Hindi lyrics. While the male singers have done a good job, Anushka has surpassed them with the throw of her impressive voice. It is more of a dance number.

A contrast to this is the soft, melodious "Lehrein" sung by Anusha Mani, Neuman Pinto and Nikhil D'Souza. The soulful, poignant track is quite likeable.

The song also has a remixed version, but the original is more appealing.

Finally Anushka sings "By the way", a track with a powerful starting. Neuman gives ample support to Anushka and adds to this youthful, energetic and electrifying song. The rock-pop song has a punch and will be liked by the younger generation a lot.

Amit Trivedi deserves to be applauded for the soundtrack of "Aisha", which is contemporary yet different. The composer has tried to fuse new sounds in the music of the film, which has worked very well.

Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai

Music Director: Pritam Chakraborty

Lyricists: Amitabh Bhattacharya, Neelesh Misra and Irshad Kamil

Singers: Mika Singh, KK, Dominique Cerejo, Karthik, Sunidhi Chauhan, Mohit Chauhan, Rahat Fateh Ali Khan and Tulsi Kumar

Rating:***

Composer Pritam Chakraborty usually generates interest with his new albums and he has succeeded in doing so with his latest offering, "Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai". The music of this crime thriller has its moments and most of the songs are hummable.

The album boasts of nine tracks.

It starts with the melodious, soft love ballad "Pee loon" in the voice of Mohit Chauhan. The song has touches of Sufi and is quite likeable. The song gives a good start to the soundtrack and is a winner all the way.

The song also arrives in a remix version.

It is followed by another appealing composition "Tum jo aaye". Sung by Rahat Fateh Ali Khan and Tulsi Kumar, it has elements of qawwali. The soothing number strikes a chord with the listener.

The song also has a reprise version attached, which is a solo Rahat Fateh Ali Khan version. Even though the original is promising, the reprise version takes the cake.

Then comes "Parda", a song that is a mix of two of R.D Burman's greatest hits and few original lyrics. Sung by Sunidhi Chauhan and Rana Mazumder, the song has influences of "Monica oh my darling" and "Duniya mein" and brings in the true retro feel.

While the basic essence of the old songs is kept intact, Pritam brings in a new flavour by doing his own bit. After a long time one gets to hear a cabaret number album in a movie album.

Up next is "I am in love", a soft, pleasing, romantic track with KK and Domnique Cerejo behind the mike. "I am in love" shows potential with its melodious music and is good to hear in loop. It is a song that will appeal to the younger generation more.

It has two more versions - dance and duet.

Finally, there is "Babu Rao mast hai". Sung by Mika, it is an edgy and mischievous song about a certain Babu Rao, who is believed to be an important character in the film. The song is average and musically not that appealing.

On the whole, the album impresses and will appeal to music lovers.

Tere Bin Laden

Singers: Shankar Mahadevan, Ali Zafar, Jaspreet Singh, Suraj Jagan, Akruti Kakkar, Master Saleem and Anousha Mani

Lyricists: Jaideep Sahni, Dhruv Dhalla, Jaspreet Singh and Ali Zafar

Music Directors: Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy

Rating:**1/2

It is touted as a different kind of film and it seems that the music has been composed to suit the mood of the movie as the majority of the songs in "Tere Bin Laden" are not hummable, making the soundtrack average.

The album boasts of seven originals and one remix.

It kickstarts with a very quirky song titled "Ullu da pattha", crooned by Shankar Mahadevan and Ali Zafar, who is also acting in the film. It sounds like a situational track with Punjabi influences. The lyrics will not appeal to many. Not a music lover's delight.

The song also has a remixed version.

Next is "Shor sharaba" that has Suraj Jagan and Jaspreet Singh behind the mike. The song meant for the dance floor has touches of rap as well but becomes monotonous after a while because composers have retained the same tone throughout the song. In short, it lacks the potential to be a hit.

"I love amreeka" is foot-tapping and interesting. The song has many variations that add an edge to it. Sung by Shankar, Akriti Kakkar and Anusha Mani, it is a fun song that one would like to listen to.

There is also a reprised version of the song which features Ali instead of Shankar. Not very different from the original. Later in the album, a shorter version of the song appears as "Welcome to amreeka" sung by Ali.

Then there is "Kukduk" that brings alive Punjabi folk music. Sung by Master Saleem, the song has rustic flavours. It can be termed an average number.

Finally, there is "bus ek soch" sung by Ali again. It has a very young, campus feel. Guitaring is prominent and the song has a potential to become a hit with the youngsters. It is light, simple and easy going. A nice track.

On the whole, the album is not like the conventional works of Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, but it seems the songs are composed keeping the theme of the movie in mind.

Khatta Meetha

Singers: Kunal Ganjawala, KK, Sunidhi Chauhan, Shehzad Roy, Daler Mehndi, Kalpana Patowary and Harshdeep Kaur

Lyricists: Irshad Kamil, Shehzad Roy and Nitin Raikwar

Music Directors: Pritam Chakraborty and Shani

Rating:**

It might be a laugh riot, considering that it's got filmmaker Priyadarshan and actor Akshay Kumar behind it, but forthcoming film "Khatta Meetha" is not a music lover's delight. The film has an ordinary soundtrack with maximum fast- paced tracks.

The film that is Akshay's production venture boasts of four originals and three remixes.

The music of the film kickstarts with "Nana chi taang" crooned by Kunal Ganjawala that has influences of Marathi. The love song also has a rap portion. Overall, it is an average song that does have some energy but nothing more to offer. It also has a remixed version attached to it.

Next in line is the only soft song of the album "Sajde" that has KK and Sunidhi Chauhan behind the mike. The romantic track has a Sufi feel to it and is quite hummable.

"Sajde" is quite Indian in its approach barring few westernized beats. The singers do a great job and bring out a well sung, melodious song.

It too has a remix version which has extra beats but the spirit of the song remains intact even in this version.

Then there is "Bullshit" that features Shani as the composer. Sung by Shehzad Roy, the song is a spoof on the politicians of the country.

It sees a mix of Hindi and English lyrics and has catchy beats. The track is situational and might not long last in the minds of the listener.

Finally, we have "Aila re aila" - a catchy, energetic song, sung by Daler Mehndi and Kalpana Patowary. It has a very strong orchestration with whistles in prominence that makes it more of a masses' song. Foot-tapping, with Marathi lingo in parts, the song has some potential.

The remix is average.

On the whole, "Khatta Meetha" has nothing major to offer in music and Pritam has done an average job.
