Rating: ***1/2

If you thought that "Munni badnaam hui" from "Dabangg" will take the cake for being the most popular item number this year, then think again! The song "Sheila ki jawani" from the forthcoming film "Tees Maar Khan" is ready to give it a tough competition.

The film has music by composer duo Vishal-Shekhar and offers five originals and four remix tracks. All the songs from the album are fun, energetic and pacy.

The album starts with a bang with the energy-packed title track that is the only song written and composed by Shirish Kunder. The highlight of the song is singer Sonu Niigam has crooned it all by himself in many different voices including that of a woman. The song has all the ingredients of being a chartbuster with a change in tempo. With engaging beats and dialogues, the song gives a good start to the soundtrack.

The title track has a re-mixed version too.

Next comes "Sheila ki jawani" sung brilliantly by Sunidhi Chauhan by ample support from Vishal Dadlani. It is an instantly likeable song. The beats are very interesting that makes the listener get up and shake a leg. It's sure to be a favourite at the DJ consoles.

This one too has a re-mixed version.

The album takes a slight change with a qawwali, which has become a novelty in film albums nowadays. The song called 'Wallah re wallah', has Kamal Khan, Raja Hasan, Shreya Ghoshal and Shekhar Ravjiani behind the mike. The song has good beats, making it pacy and interesting.

There is a remix of this song too.

Then comes an average track titled "Badey dilwale", which is sung by Sukhwinder Singh and Shreya Ghoshal and additional voices by Suzanne Dmello, Vishal and Shekhar. It is also a fast-paced and high on beats song, but it fails to create the same impact like other songs in the album.

The remixed version too adds nothing extraordinary to the original.

Finally, there is "Happy ending" that has been sung by the participants of music reality shows. The singers include Prajakta Shukre, Harshit Saxena, Abhijeet sawant and Debojit Saha. It is quite an average song.

On the whole, the album is a must hear and a fun package of dance numbers that will keep the energy high.

Band Baaja Baaraat

Band Baaja BaaraatMusic Directors: Salim Merchant and Sulaiman Merchant

Lyricist: Amitabh Bhattacharya

Singers: Salim Merchant, Sunidhi Chauhan, Benny Dayal, Shreya Ghoshal, Himani Kapoor, Amitabh Bhattacharya, Harshdeep Kaur, Labh Jajua, Shraddha Pandit, Master Saleem, Abhijit Vaghani and Sukhwinder Singh

Rating: ***

When you hear the name "Band Baaja Baaraat", you expect a full on, energetic, foot-tapping album which is a total entertainer - that's exactly what composer duo Salim and Sulaiman Merchant have achieved with the soundtrack of the film.

They have composed seven originals and two remixes.

The album begins with a bang with "Ainvayi ainvayi". The fast-paced dance number with electrifying beats has a high dose of Punjabi elements, which makes it a potent mixture dance events. Sung by Salim Merchant and Sunidhi Chauhan, the lyrics of the track are catchy. The song gives a good start to the soundtrack.

Dilli Club Mix is the remixed version of the song in which Salim has been replaced by Master Saleem.

Next is "Tarkeebein", which is another likeable song but totally different from the previous one. Crooned by Benny Dayal and Salim again, it is slower in pace and possesses a sense of calmness. The style of the composition is quite similar to an A.R. Rahman song, but still it doesn't give the feeling of dejà vu. The frequent change of tempo gives it an edge.

"Adha Ishq" is a solo by Shreya Ghoshal. Female solos have become quite rare nowadays; so its nice to hear one in an album. The slow, soft, romantic track outing is not great but hummable.

Then there is "Dum dum", which has a Sufi touch. The love song grows on you. With Benny Dayal and Himani Kapoor behind the mike, it entails strong orchestration.

The song also has a remixed version called Sufi mix where Sukhwinder Singh replaces Benny.

"Mitra" is a lengthy number sung by Amitabh Bhattacharya with ample support from Salim Merchant. The sound of drums is quite prominent throughout the song, making it an interesting hear.

Keeping in mind the theme of the film, the next song "Baari barsi" is an apt addition. Crooned by Harshdeep Kaur, Labh Janjua and Salim, it is soaked in Punjabi flavour. It's a wedding folk song usually sung during marriage ceremonies. By giving it foot-tapping beats, the composers have turned it into an enjoyable number.

Finally, the soundtrack offers the title track, which is more like a theme song. With just the title of the song as the lyrics sung by Salim and Shraddha Pandit, the largely instrumental piece is quite entertaining. The beats are engaging and will make you dance instantly.

On the whole it is full of fun-filled soundtrack and dance numbers are the highlight of the soundtrack.

Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey

Khelein Hum Jee Jaan SeyMusic Director: Sohail Sen

Lyricist: Javed Akhtar

Singers: Sohail Sen, Pamela Jain, Ranjini Jose chorus

Rating: ***

After working with Ashutosh Gowariker in film "What's Your Raashee?" composer Sohail Sen teamed up with the filmmaker in period film "Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey". Packed with high energy and soft soothing melodious songs, the album is high on patriotic sentiment.

It boasts of five originals. The film is based on Manini Chatterjee's book "Do and Die: The Chittagong Uprising 1930-34", and the composer has tried to stick to the theme of the movie in his songs.

The first song of the album, "Yeh des hai mera", is a solo sung by Sohail. Even though the title is quite similar to "Yeh jo des hai mera" from Gowariker's previous film "Swades", the two songs are significantly different.

"Yeh des hai mera" is a slow, calm, patriotic song and evokes feelings of encouragement. It is effortlessly sung by Sohail. A good start for the album.

Next is "Nayan Tere". Crooned by Pamela Jain and Ranjini Jose, it has a certain amount of mischief and innocence in it owing to the lyrics and the way it has been rendered. The predominance of flute makes it melodious and hummable. In the end, a few lines in Bengali have been also incorporated to keep the soul of the film intact.

The title track of the film is a high tempo, energetic number and what makes it a must hear is the vocals by children from the Suresh Wadkar Ajivasan Music Academy. The dynamism in the voice of these kids and the whistling are the highlight of the song. It oozes patriotism and is so contagious that listeners actually feel the emotion in the song. It has the potential to be a new freedom anthem for the youth.

The only romantic track in the album is "Sapney salone", which has Sohail and Pamela behind the mike. A soft, pleasing and simple track, it has a tranquillising effect on listeners. Melodious composition and soft orchestration are the pluses of the love song.

Then there is the much talked about Hindi version of the "Vande Mataram". It is also in chorus by singers from the Cine Singers Association Chorus Group. It is power-packed and energetic and evokes a feeling of love and pride for the country.

The makers have also packed the background score of the film in the album under various titles like "Long live Chittagong", "The Teenagers Whistle", "Surjya's Sorrow", "Vande Mataram", "The Escape", "Nayan Tere (sad) and "Revolutinary Comrades".

The music sticks to the theme of the film and yet it is entertaining and interesting. Sohail has tried to keep the orchestration subdued and has focused on vocals. Indian instruments like flute and sitar are widely used.
