Kites

Singers: KK, Vishal Dadlani, Suraj Jagan, Hrithik Roshan, Suzanne D'Mello, Rajesh Roshan, Anirudh Bhola and Anushka Manchanda

Music Director: Rajesh Roshan; Lyricists: Nasir Faraaz and Asif Ali Beg

Rating:*** 1/3

Rajesh Roshan has another hit album in the soundtrack of much-awaited film "Kites". The album boasts of five originals and four remixes and all the songs exude freshness and melody. Most of them have a romantic touch and it seems the composer composed them specially for people in love.

But it won't be wrong to say that the highlight of the soundtrack is the song sung by Hrithik Roshan.

The album opens with "Zindagi do pal ki", a melodious song, currently doing the rounds on television channels. The mushy song instantly connects, thanks to simple but meaningful poetry and effective vocals by KK.

This track also has a remix version, which doesn't sound like an unnecessary addition.

"Dil kyun yeh mera", crooned by KK again has a soft, soothing beginning that makes you sway. The romantic song gets a rock feel in the middle, which gives it an edge. A well-composed track.

This too has a remixed version, which unlike most remixes has some substance. It does not entail unnecessary sounds but has beats that gel well with the song. The rap that comes along makes the remix worth a hear.

Next is Vishal Dadlani and Suraj Jagan singing "Tum bhi ho wahi". A slow start, but it picks up pace after a few seconds. The punch in it makes it all the more interesting. It experiments a lot with percussions.

The remixed version of the song, however, is average.

Then we have the most anticipated song of the album, "Kites in the sky". Hrithik makes his singing debut with the breezy love ballad in English. Hrithik proves his mettle as a singer with this soft, free flowing melody.

The rise and fall of tempo is impressive. Suzanne D Mello gives ample support to Hrithik with the Spanish lyrics. Even though it has minimal orchestration, Hrithik does a commendable job and manages to pull off the song very well.

Finally there is "Fire" with Rajesh Roshan, Vishal Dadlani, Anirudh Bhola and Anushka Manchanda behind the mike. The song is marked by a long prelude, electronic sounds and strong orchestration. The vocals too come along way, but much later. It sounds like a track to be used as a background score.

It also has an English version, which is not too different from the Hindi version.

On the whole, for "Kites", Rajesh Roshan has experimented with some modern sounds and beats that make the album interesting. One can look forward to the album that has a potential to become a hit.

Jaane Kahan Se Aayi Hai

Singers: Rashid Ali, Sonu Niigaam, Soumya Raoh, Shaan and Sunidhi Chauhan

Lyricist: Sameer

Music Directors: Sajid-Wajid

Rating:**

It's high time composer duo Sajid-Wajid tried something fresh. The two experimented in "Veer" and tried to move away from their signature style, but they are back to their usual stuff in "Jaane Kahan Se Aayi Hai". The soundtrack has no retention value and doesn't have the potential to stand out.

The album offers four originals and two remixes.

It opens with "Keh do zara this" with Rashid Ali behind the mike. The song is an amalgamation of English and Hindi lyrics. It would have made a better impact on the listeners if the lyrics had been written in one language. The love ballad fails to generate interest.

Its remixed version is faster in pace, but has nothing extraordinary.

"Nacha main tere naal" is a predictable Punjabi dance number. Sung by Sonu Niigaam and Soumya Raoh, the fast- paced song gives you a sense of deja vu since one has heard many such songs in the past. You can hear it once.

Next is the title track crooned by Shaan in his soft, melodious voice. The foot-tapping, fast-paced number manages to create an impact thanks to western arrangements.

The remix version is average.

Finally, the album concludes with "Koi rok bhi lo", a romantic track effectively sung by Sunidhi Chauhan and Sonu. The slow-paced song is the best offering of the album. The orchestration and the brilliantly given vocals give the song an edge.

On the whole, the album has nothing new to offer.

Paathshaala

Time and again it has been evidenced that when you are not having many expectations from an album, the soundtrack only ends up throwing a pleasant surprise. 'Paathshaala', which has newcomer Hanif Sheikh composing the music as well writing the lyrics, is one such album.

Though one does expect good music from a Shahid Kapoor starrer, the genre of the film had suggested a few situational tracks which would only work with the narrative of the film. What you eventually get to hear in the album is a lot more though.

First to come is 'Aye Khuda' that instantly catches your attention, right from composition, singing to lyrics point of view.

Everyone from Hanif to singer Salim Merchant (of Salim-Sulaiman duo) is fantastic in the way they go about creating an urban sound for 'Aye Khuda' which is as soothing as it gets. A seamless track that just flows without any interruption whatsoever, it is the kind of number that has to be set in repeat mode and forgotten.

The mood shifts to something even more upbeat with 'Paathshaala - Khushnuma' that follows next. Sung by Vishal Dadlani (of Vishal-Shekhar fame), 'Khushnuma' boasts of a terrific beginning which is just the kind of number you want your DJ to play for the dance floor.

It is surprising to see that this is the only number in the album which doesn't find a 'remix version' for itself because it does boast of the kind of beats that are just right to set your feet tapping. A young energetic urban track, 'Khushnuma' makes it two out of two for 'Paathshaala'.

Well, it is soon three out of three for the album with Lucky Ali being his best behind the mike for 'Bekaraar'.

A number where he is required to stretch his vocals beyond a point and retain a certain melody which is expected from a love song like this, 'Bekaraar' brings in further variety to the album.

Listen to the song once and rest assured, it would make you play it all over again. Boasting of a beautiful melody which can never get out of fashion, 'Bekaraar' stays with you long after it is through.

The sound of 'Paathshaala' remains intact though with Tulsi Kumar coming behind the mike along with Akansha Lama and Hanif Shaikh himself for 'Mujhe Teri'.

Yet another soft track that gives you a reason to smile as it plays on, 'Mujhe Teri' has a Western setting to it though at the core of it, it retains it's Indian melody. This is the only song in the album that has a co-composer (Vijay Lama) coming along with Hanif Sheikh.

The album concludes with 'Teri Marzi Aye Khuda', a solo by Kailash Kher, which has a sad content to it but thankfully doesn't turn out to be a sad hear at all.

A situational track which should be played in the film during a tense situation when things aren't quite going as per the plans, 'Teri Marzi' may not be hummed around for weeks to come but still isn't the kind of bad hear that would make you switch on to something different in the middle of it's play.

In any case, there is 'Paathshaala-Theme', a two minute theme piece, which is there to bring the album to a euphoric end.

As it turns out, the songs in 'Paathshaala', aren't just melodious or pretty much belonging to today's times; they are also good enough to be heard for many more months to come, with or without the context of the film.

Now that is pretty much a win for an album since in the current times of instant coffee and quick entertainment, there is actually a score like 'Paathshaala' that aims to go beyond that.

Housefull

Unabashed entertainment. That's what one expects from a team that comprises of the likes of Akshay Kumar, Sajid Khan and Sajid Nadiadwala. None of these three entities associated with 'Housefull' have made any pretensions of doing anything which is non-commercial.

Due to this very reason, one can also expect that Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy would come out of their 'zone' (which means the likes of 'Rock On', Karthik Calling Karthik' etc.) and instead end up making something which is 'massy junta ki pasand'.

That's something on display at the very beginning of 'Houseful' with Sameer written 'Oh Girl You're Mine' that has newcomer Tarun Sagar pairing up with Alyssa Mendonsa and Loy Mendonsa.

Together they come up with a fun outing which doesn't quite rely on the lyrics and instead has a hook line (the song's title) which is a good enough reason to play the song all over again.

Boasting of some addictive beats that make you put the song in a loop and wait for the video to hit the screen soon, 'Oh Girl You're Mine' is a winner.

Remember 'On the roof, in the rain' from 'Masti'? A similar setting is evidenced once again in 'Papa Jag Jayega' which has the lead couples of 'Housefull' trying to have a hush-hush rendezvous in the house while being constantly worried about the 'papa' who is sleeping.

A situational track written by Amitabh Bhattacharya which has a horde of singers - Ritu Pathak, Neeraj Sridhar, Alyssa Mendonsa, Amitabh Bhattacharya - coming together, 'Papa Jag Jayega' doesn't let the tempo of the album down. Yes, it is situational in appeal and hence the shelf life is limited. However, inside the film's narrative, it won't be a bad bet at all.

Next to arrive is the biggest of all - 'Aapka Kya Hoga - Dhanno' - which is a killer song all the way. To put it simply, this re-done version of 80s classic 'Apni To Jaise Taise' (Lawaaris) is a good enough paisa vasool element of the album since this song has not lost it's freshness despite being played on for 25 years.

Moreover, the musical team of SEL and Sameer along with Mika, Sunidhi Chauhan, Shankar Mahadevan and Sajid Khan (as singers) ensure that the song would now be remembered for many more years to come.

That's because rather than coming up with a routine remix that may have been done by dozen odd lesser teams in the past, there is a new feel given to 'Aapka Kya Hoga' with the help of an altogether new beginning and different lyrics.

If at all there is some similarity that remains, it is only in the interspersing portions where the hook line 'Aapka Kya Hoga' is heard.

The fun mood of the album coupled with the nostalgia of the 70s/80s continues with 'I Don't Know What To Do', courtesy the man behind the mike - Shabbir Kumar.

For those who have been following the music from the past, Shabbir Kumar was the man who was known for his unique voice during the era gone by. He hasn't lost his touch despite a gap of decades after which he is returning in 'I Don't Know What To Do' and thankfully the experiment works.

A track where a young sensual woman (brought to fore with perfection by Sunidhi Chauhan) is trying to seduce a man who has been caught unaware, this is one fun outing that many amongst audience would love to be a part of.

Finally arrives the track 'He's Such A Loser' which basically describes the character of the central protagonist in the film (played by Akshay Kumar) who is a big looser in life.

The fun here lies in the fact that despite its out and out Western treatment, it's lyrics by Amitabh Bhattacharya see a good coming together of Mumbaiya tone and flavour.

Sung by Vivienne Pocha and Amitabh Bhattacharya himself, 'He's Such A Loser' is a catchy number that stays with you immediately after the first listening itself.

In fact this is one element that works throughout 'Housefull' as whatever is served to you is constant coffee. The tunes remain with you, they entertain you and at the end of it all, you also know that these won't quite be ever lasting.

However, in the fast paced journey that everything is taking currently, it's the survival of what works 'today'. In that aspect, 'Housefull' works and ensures that there won't be any dull moment once the songs play on screen.
