American composer Wayne Sharp is not new to Bollywood. After composing for Prakash Jha's "Gangaajal" and "Apharan", the music director collaborates with Jha once again for "Raajneeti". The music is impressive, especially the semi-classical track "Mora piya".

The film that stars actors like Ajay Devgn, Katrina Kaif, Ranbir Kapoor and Arjun Rampal among others has five originals and three remixes.

The album opens with "Bheegi si bhaagi si", which has a pleasing, melodious prelude. Crooned by Antara Mitra and Mohit Chauhan, the love song is foot-tapping and engages the listener. Mohit's voice is apt for a song of this genre.

Next in line is the semi-classical "Mora piya", which is undoubtedly the best song of the soundtrack. It is nice to hear a song like this, particularly when numbers with a classical touch have become a rare sight in Bollywood films nowadays. The track has been effectively sung by Aadesh Shrivastava, Shashi and Rosalie Nicholson.

"Mora piya" has two more versions - the "Twilight Mix" and the "Trance Mix", the latter sung by Kavita Seth.

Then there is "Ishq barse" with Pronob Biswas, Hamsika Iyer and Swanand Kirkire behind the mike. This song has a folk and rustic touch with influences of classical music too in some parts. After a few minutes, the song picks up pace and becomes lively. While itsn't a bad track, it isn't brilliant either.

The song also has a remix version, which is average.

Finally there are two versions of a song called "Dhan dhan dharti" - one sung by Shankar Mahadevan and the other by Sonu Niigaam. The patriotic song has musical influences of Vande Mataram and both the versions are quite similar except for the diverse singing styles of the two singers. The song with Indo-Western touches is likley to make a mark too.

On the whole, the soundtrack of "Raajneeti" is a mixed bag with some brilliant compositions and some average numbers.

When the credits boast of composer A.R. Rahman, lyricist Gulzar and director Mani Ratnam, expectations are bound to be high. In "Raavan", the trio has brought out a lethal combination presenting a soundtrack that is fresh, high on energy and in tune with the soul of the movie.

Starring Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai, "Raavan" has six songs but no remixes.

The album starts with "Beera" that describes Abhishek's character in the film. With strong orchestration, congo beats and foot-tapping rhythm, the song instantly connects with the listener and is highly intriguing. Sung by Vijay Prakash, Mustafa Kutoane and Keerthi Sagathia, "Beera" is truly enthralling.

Next is "Behene de". Wonderfully crooned by Karthik and Mohammed Irfan, it is the best song of the album. Even though it has a 50-second-long and haunting prelude, the listener doesn't lose interest. In fact, the prelude creates more curiosity about what is in store. The track has a punch and holds the attention of the listener till the end.

Changing the mood of the album is the next song called "Thok de killi". Sung by Sukhwinder Singh, the fast-paced track is loud, rustic and yet impressive. The increased pace and rise in the tempo towards the end gives an adrenalin rush.

Then there is "Ranjha ranjha", which is an average track belted out by Rekha Bhradwaj and Javed Ali. The other songs of the album are so captivating that this one fails to create a mark.

Up next is "Khilli re", a slow, soft love song that brings out the longing of a woman for her lover. Sung by Reena Bhardwaj in her sweet melodious voice, it has a balmy effect and the melody strikes a chord with the listener.

Finally, there is a wedding song "Kata kata". The thumping beats and strong orchestration can make it chartbuster. Sung by Ila Arun, Sapna Awasthi and Kunal Ganjawala, the track has a celebratory tune and a Rajasthani folk touch.

On the whole, the album is a musical treat and impresses thoroughly. Away from the usual psychedelic beats and run -of-the-mill compositions, the music of "Raavan" shows that Rahman is truly a maestro and when he teams up with Gulzar and Mani Ratnam, the result is pure magic.

Badmaash Company

What stands out in the soundtrack of Shahid Kapoor-starrer "Badmaash Company" is the absence of female singers. But apart from this anomaly, composer Pritam Chakraborty has stuck to his trademark style of energetic, fast-paced music.

The album contains four originals and two remixes.

The soundtrack starts off with a song called "Ayaashi" sung by KK. It is a catchy song with a heavy use of percussion. The upbeat track has all the qualities of becoming a hit with the youngsters.

It also has a remix version, which has nothing new to offer.

Next is a slightly off-the-road song "Jingle jingle", which has been crooned by Mohit Chauhan in his youthful voice. It begins with the strumming of the guitar and also has elements of rap in parts. The thematic lyrics make the song interesting.

Then there is "Chaska" sung by Krishna. It has a slight rustic flavour but fails to generate interest. It ends up as a very ordinary song.

"Chaska" also has a remix version, which is just a little faster-paced than the original.

With "Fakeera", the album takes a Sufi turn but with a rock base. Sung by Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, it is an amalgamation of Indian vocals and westernised music. It is quite an appealing track.

The last number is the film's title track by Benny Dayal. The song has influences of music from James Bond films and is also musically similar to the first track "Ayaashi". The track is sure to become a regular at DJ consoles.

On the whole, the music of the film is average. Pritam has not experimented much and mostly sticks to his tried and tested style. The songs, however, could become hits on the dance floor.

Bumm Bumm Bole

The music of director Priyadarshan's children's film "Bumm Bumm Bole" mainly focuses on inspirational songs. Following the multi-composer format, the film's music is likeable, but the songs may not really go on to become chartbusters.

The movie, which stars child actor Darsheel Safary of "Taare Zameen Par" fame, is slated to release May 14. The soundtrack offers four originals.

The album opens with Shaan crooning the title track of the film. The song has a feel-good quality and Shaan's rendition makes it a decent hear. While it can't be called brilliant, it is certainly not bad.

Next in line is "Aashaon ke pankh laga le" with Kirti Sagathia and Hrishikesh Kamerkar behind the mike. This one too uses the title of the film in the lyrics. Fast-paced and inspirational, the song is characterised by thumping beats, which make it catchy and an interesting hear.

Then we have Malini Awasthi singing "Man ki aasha", a melodious, motivational track with a folk touch. The composition is interesting and has touches of music from the hills.

Finally there is "Rang de" sung by Clinton Cerejo and Kirti Sagathia. The strumming of the guitar in the song makes it quite youthful and appealing. It is a soft number that doesn't leave a mark instantly but grows on you slowly.

On the whole, the soundtrack is average. Anyway, one doesn't usually expect a children's film to provide music that appeals to all listeners.

Kites

Rajesh Roshan has another hit album in the soundtrack of much-awaited film "Kites". The album boasts of five originals and four remixes and all the songs exude freshness and melody. Most of them have a romantic touch and it seems the composer composed them specially for people in love.

But it won't be wrong to say that the highlight of the soundtrack is the song sung by Hrithik Roshan.

The album opens with "Zindagi do pal ki", a melodious song, currently doing the rounds on television channels. The mushy song instantly connects, thanks to simple but meaningful poetry and effective vocals by KK.

This track also has a remix version, which doesn't sound like an unnecessary addition.

"Dil kyun yeh mera", crooned by KK again has a soft, soothing beginning that makes you sway. The romantic song gets a rock feel in the middle, which gives it an edge. A well-composed track.

This too has a remixed version, which unlike most remixes has some substance. It does not entail unnecessary sounds but has beats that gel well with the song. The rap that comes along makes the remix worth a hear.

Next is Vishal Dadlani and Suraj Jagan singing "Tum bhi ho wahi". A slow start, but it picks up pace after a few seconds. The punch in it makes it all the more interesting. It experiments a lot with percussions.

The remixed version of the song, however, is average.

Then we have the most anticipated song of the album, "Kites in the sky". Hrithik makes his singing debut with the breezy love ballad in English. Hrithik proves his mettle as a singer with this soft, free flowing melody.

The rise and fall of tempo is impressive. Suzanne D Mello gives ample support to Hrithik with the Spanish lyrics. Even though it has minimal orchestration, Hrithik does a commendable job and manages to pull off the song very well.

Finally there is "Fire" with Rajesh Roshan, Vishal Dadlani, Anirudh Bhola and Anushka Manchanda behind the mike. The song is marked by a long prelude, electronic sounds and strong orchestration. The vocals too come along way, but much later. It sounds like a track to be used as a background score.

It also has an English version, which is not too different from the Hindi version.

On the whole, for "Kites", Rajesh Roshan has experimented with some modern sounds and beats that make the album interesting. One can look forward to the album that has a potential to become a hit.

Jaane Kahan Se Aayi Hai

It's high time composer duo Sajid-Wajid tried something fresh. The two experimented in "Veer" and tried to move away from their signature style, but they are back to their usual stuff in "Jaane Kahan Se Aayi Hai". The soundtrack has no retention value and doesn't have the potential to stand out.

The album offers four originals and two remixes.

It opens with "Keh do zara this" with Rashid Ali behind the mike. The song is an amalgamation of English and Hindi lyrics. It would have made a better impact on the listeners if the lyrics had been written in one language. The love ballad fails to generate interest.

Its remixed version is faster in pace, but has nothing extraordinary.

"Nacha main tere naal" is a predictable Punjabi dance number. Sung by Sonu Niigaam and Soumya Raoh, the fast- paced song gives you a sense of deja vu since one has heard many such songs in the past. You can hear it once.

Next is the title track crooned by Shaan in his soft, melodious voice. The foot-tapping, fast-paced number manages to create an impact thanks to western arrangements.

The remix version is average.

Finally, the album concludes with "Koi rok bhi lo", a romantic track effectively sung by Sunidhi Chauhan and Sonu. The slow-paced song is the best offering of the album. The orchestration and the brilliantly given vocals give the song an edge.

On the whole, the album has nothing new to offer.
